Carnegie Hall

It was the experience of a lifetime for Jeffersonville High School choir students, who performed on the top stage in the nation: Carnegie Hall in New York City!

This stage is known for hosting the world’s best artists, including Tchaikovsky, Dvořák, Mahler, Bartók, George Gershwin, Billie Holiday, Judy Garland, The Beatles and many more.

Congratulations, Red Devils!

CES Groundbreaking

Construction has now started on the new Charlestown Elementary School!

The new school, which will be built at the current Jonathan Jennings Elementary location, will feature 142,555 square feet, making it one of the largest elementary schools in the state.

“As Charlestown and River Ridge continue to grow, we wanted a school that could address the changing needs of our dynamic community,” said Superintendent Mark Laughner. “This new building will do that and more. It will feature all the latest technology, integrated safety features, and even a slide that the students will use as a special reward. It will be large enough for all our Charlestown students in pre-k through grade 5 with room to grow.”

Currently, Pleasant Ridge Elementary houses students from pre-K to 2nd grade, while students in 3rd through 5th grade attend Jonathan Jennings.

This new building is one of two that are scheduled to start construction this year. Thomas Jefferson Elementary and Wilson Elementary will combine into Pike Elementary, which is scheduled to break ground in the fall. Pike Elementary and Charlestown Elementary are both slated to open in time for the 2025-26 school year.

Academy Spotlight

As a part of their Freshman Seminar class, all Freshman Academy students at Charlestown High School participated in mock interviews with local business professionals.

To prepare for this, students created resumes and wrote ‘elevator’ speeches. Both of these were aligned with an entry-level, part-time job that would provide the student with the necessary skills and experiences that will better prepare them for their future careers.

Through this experience, students demonstrated how to respond to constructive criticism and how to dress professionally for an interview.

Thank you to our community business partners for helping with this important lesson.

Academy Spotlight

New Washington High School’s inaugural “Adulting Day” was a huge success!

Students participated in their choice of micro-learning sessions taught by local experts on various topics, including how to change a tire, how to budget, time management skills, how to prepare taxes, sewing basics and more. This was all part of the GCCS Academies program.

Students have requested that this become an annual event.

Thank you to all the businesses and volunteers for partnering with Greater Clark to help prepare our students for life following graduation.

Building for the Future

Greater Clark County Schools Board of Trustees approved agreements with contractors for the new Jeffersonville High School pool/natatorium and a new Parkwood Elementary building.

The pool/natatorium will be one-of-a-kind, with a 50-meter stretch pool featuring 10 lanes and a diving well with two 1-meter boards and one 3-meter board. It will also have a therapy pool.

The Parkwood project will replace the outdated 54-year-old building with a new one at the current site. This new building will also help address the growing student population in the area.

Both projects are part of the district’s 5-year facility plan.

Academy Spotlight

Students in the Freshmen Academy at JHS attended an in-house showcase event where they got a closer look at the numerous program offerings within their building. This event provided first-hand insight into some of the activities, projects, and experiences that take place within that program. As a result, freshmen are better prepared to select their career-academy and the career-related coursework within their program’s pathway.
