Standards-Based Reporting
At Greater Clark County Schools, we use a system called Standards-Based Reporting for kindergarten. In a standards-based classroom, learning focuses on mastering specific key skills, known as learning targets, by the end of the school year. Rather than evaluating students on a single letter grade or mixing academic performance with behaviors and participation, a Standards-Based Report Card tracks progress on specific grade-level skills over time. Because every child learns at their own pace, students receive multiple opportunities to practice, learn, and demonstrate mastery toward these end-of-year goals.
Standards-Based Reporting offers four major benefits for your child’s learning journey:
• Clearer Feedback: Instead of a single letter grade, you receive detailed insight into which exact skills your child has mastered and where they need extra support.
• Focus on Mastery: This system encourages a growth model. Students are allowed to revisit concepts and show improvement without being penalized for early mistakes made during the learning process.
• Consistency: Evaluation remains consistent across teachers because all students are assessed against the same end-of-year academic standards.
• Accurate Alignment: Grades reflect pure academic achievement rather than behavior or participation, giving you an accurate picture of student growth.
