Fields Named in Honor of Coaches
Two longtime coaches who made a lasting impact on Jeffersonville High School now have fields named in their honor.
The David K. Hatfield Softball Field and the Bill Ware Football Field were officially named at the school board meeting on Sept. 27, 2022.
Coach Hatfield, a 40-year GCCS employee, coached many sports including football, gymnastics, and softball. He led the Red Devil gymnastics team to their only state finals appearance in 1984, where they finished as the state runner-up. Coach Hatfield was at the helm of the softball program as it transitioned from slow pitch to modern-day fast pitch. He constructed the original field and recycled the old football field fence to enclose the softball diamond.
He coached more than 25 players who went on to compete at the collegiate level with many pursuing a coaching career.
Coach Ware was a long-time football coach, teacher, and Greater Clark County Schools administrator. A 20-year head coach for the Red Devils, Coach Ware has over 100 career wins and 3 sectional championships, making him the most successful coach in Jeffersonville High School football history. Coach Ware has coached over 150 players who went on to compete at the collegiate level, with two of his former Red Devils playing professionally in the National Football League.
Coach Ware’s impact can be seen all over Southern Indiana as several of his former players have gone on to pursue coaching careers at various levels and are community leaders in their professional careers.
