Academies

Building a Stronger Community: Public Service Academy in Action

This month, the Public Service Academy expanded its learning beyond the classroom for a high-impact Human Services Career Showcase at Family Ark. Sponsored by the Greater Clark Education Foundation, this immersive event allowed students to “test-drive” the vital professions that keep our community healthy, safe, and thriving.
Through a fast-paced “Career Speed Dating” session and hands-on micro-simulations, our students moved beyond the theory of public service into the practice of making a difference.

The “Work Day” Highlights:
  • Life-Saving Precision: Students mastered hands-only CPR with the Clark County Health Dept.—learning that being a hero is a skill anyone can acquire with the right training.
  • The Verdict is In: Using professional scripts, students conducted a mock trial with Clark Circuit Court 4, experiencing the procedural weight and excitement of the legal system.
  • The Power of Connection: From mock therapy sessions with Family Ark to “Decoding Community Data” with IU Southeast to “Minding our Words” with UofL, students explored how data and empathy work together to solve complex local puzzles & improve communities.
  • Designing the Future: Whether mapping out an early childhood classroom with CASI or acting as program managers with Youth Link and Purdue Extension, students practiced the strategy and leadership required for non-profit success.
THE IMPACT: This event bridged the gap between student interest and professional reality. Our students walked away with a clearer vision of how their unique talents can serve their community.
